As Salaam Alaikum!!

I hope everyone is doing well today. This week I wanted to discuss something I get asked by a lot of new Muslimah’s, “How do you wear hijab?” To those just starting to wear the Hijab it might be a bit overwhelming but it doesn’t need to be. We will discuss the different scarf styles and some accessories to make your life easy.

The Al Amira (The princess)

In the beginning, the Amira style hijabs are a great option because they are easy to put on, great for women on the run, perfect for sports and they look professional for those who work. The Amira style comes in one or two piece styles and are a great place to start for those and less “complex” to figure out. The Amira’s come in traditional plain colors as well as bolder color and pattern options. Whether you prefer simplicity or like a little bling on your hijab you will find it available in this style. You can also mix and match plain and prints for fresh looks or even use the under piece with other scarf styles.

Turkish (square)

Next we have the Turkish or square scarf. I like the combination of an under cap (even though one is not needed) with a square hijab pinned under the chin Depending on the size of the square hijab you will get a bit more coverage in the chest and shoulder area and in my opinion seems a little more sophisticated. There are many ways to wrap the square scarf which changes the look. The basic Turkish square starts at 36 x 36 and goes up to 42 x 42. Though you can still get coverage with the smaller squares the larger ones are easier to work with.

The Shayla (rectangle)

The next option is the rectangular/Shayla scarf which is basically just a really wide and long scarf that wraps around and around and is usually pinned on the end or around the back. Rectangles come in many sizes and material. The normal rectangle is approximately 20 x 60, as seen above.

Pashmina

The pashmina is approximately 26 x 64 and come in many different weights. The lightweight pashmina can be worn all year round and is a sturdy easy to wear scarf. You will find many styles and colors and even fabrics in the pashmina.

The Maxi

And then there are the maxi scarves and they range from 27-40 x 60-70 inches. The maxi’s are much wider than the regular rectangle scarves, the wider is it the more coverage you get. Maxi’s can be worn folded in about one quarter, (shown) and still get a spectacular look. Maxis are typically very lightweight so don’t be intimidated by the extra fabric.

The Infinity

The latest scarf to hit the scene is the infinity scarf. It is a loop scarf and extremely easy to wear. To get tips on how to wear one. Paired with the ninja full coverage under scarf (shown) is open and easy to wear.

Each individual, in time, will discover their own scarf style and size preference, through experimenting and trial and error. I have mix of all styles because I love mixing it up a bit. The rectangle is the most versatile, and the beauty of this hijab is you are only limited by your imagination.

Now that we have the basics of what kinds of scarves there are let’s take a closer look at one detail in particular, scarf slippage! If you have fine hair that refuses to be tamed no matter what material your hijab is, the best solution to tame them is an under scarf. There are several styles of caps to choose from.

The Tube

Tube under scarves slip easily over your head and secure your hijab. There is a hole in the back to pull your hair through and is probably the most common under scarf available.

The Cap/Snood

Unlike the tube, the cap keeps your hair tucked inside the fabric and if your clip or band holding your hair snaps your hair is secured inside this style of under scarf. The bonnet is similar in style to the cap however it ties behind your hear therefore giving you freedom to loosen or tighten the cap for a better fit.

The Ninja

The latest full coverage under scarf is the Ninja. Ninja under scarves are slip on full coverage scarves. Great for layering, the infinity styles, thin scarves or if you like to wear your scarf loosely wrapped this under scarf will still provide the needed coverage.
